L’ABONDANCE:<\/p>\n
Cette petite zone g\u00e9ographique comporte une densit\u00e9 consid\u00e9rable de traces. c’est sans doute un des effets d’une longue histoire, mais aussi d’une fr\u00e9quentation beaucoup plus intense qu’on eut pu imaginer.Et puis, s’il y a quelques bergers malheureux qui l’expriment parfois dramatiquement et avec \u00e9loquence; la majorit\u00e9 de ces gens simples\u00a0 est heureuse-ce qui ne signifie pas r\u00e9sign\u00e9e, na\u00efve,endoctrin\u00e9e-ces gens savaient per\u00e7evoir les menues et parcimonieuses gr\u00e2ces d’une existence difficile.<\/p>\n
T\u00e9moin, ce GERARDO COSTANZO qui faillit nous lasser: dans son enthousiasme il a laiss\u00e9 son nom \u00e0 de si nombreuses reprises, que nous avions presque d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de cesser de nous int\u00e9resser \u00e0 ces traces…Fig 25-26-27<\/strong><\/p>\n Jusqu’au jour ou nous avons r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que ce \u00ab\u00a0petit Poucet\u00a0\u00bb nous livrait ses itin\u00e9raires, ses campagnes pour finir d’une fa\u00e7on inattendue: un jour Gerardo Costanzo devient:<\/p>\n GERARD COSTAN, Fig 28<\/strong><\/p>\n il s’est int\u00e9gr\u00e9, francis\u00e9 et il le fait joliment savoir dans le style italien, comme ce berger d’Aisone:Fig 29 .-Un bel exemple ou l’Histoire rejoint l’actualit\u00e9.<\/p>\n MAIN FEATURES OF UBAYE’S ENGRAVINGS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n ENGRAVINGS WEALTH<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n QUALITY OF ROCKS<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n MULTIPLICITY OF CONTRIBUTORS<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n DIVERSITY OF THEMES<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n A VIVID TRADITION<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n WEALTH: this tiny area\u00a0 exhibits a high density of traces.This is probably linked to a long history, but also to intensive visits. If there are some unsatisfied shepherds who cry their poor condition,most of these simple people appear to be happy,this does not means that they are resigned, naive or brainwashed…these people understand and value the rare and minute blessings of a difficult life.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Gerardo Costanzo was so happy to live in these valleys that he left <\/span>a number of traces; so many that we attempted to abandon their recording…until, we realized that he left us an important heritage: his trips and campaigns.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n And some day he became:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n GERARD COSTAN !<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Fully integrated, he tells us that in a\u00a0 sophisticated manner.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n A nice example where History meets\u00a0 questions of the day.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n LE SUPPORT ROCHEUX<\/strong><\/p>\n *LA NATURE DU ROCHER<\/strong><\/p>\n L’ubaye est un mus\u00e9e g\u00e9ologique, d’une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 exceptionnelle et, bien souvent les graveurs en ont per\u00e7u la qualit\u00e9.<\/p>\n T\u00e9moin: ce drapeau grav\u00e9 sur une pyramide de marbre rose qui comporte les mentions suivantes devenues presque illisibles:Fig 31-32<\/strong><\/p>\n ISLY<\/p>\n SEBASTOPOL<\/p>\n SIDI BRAHIM (en repentir sur SAINT PETERSBOURG)<\/p>\n SOLFERINO<\/p>\n et en son centre<\/p>\n HONNEUR ET PATRIE<\/p>\n L’imaginaire populaire ne s’est jamais lass\u00e9 de la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux victoires de la R\u00e9volution, de l’Empire et de leurs caricatures ult\u00e9rieures; toujours\u00a0 dans l’esprit de ce Capitaine JOLY qui croyait fermement aux\u00a0\u00bb guerres de la libert\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb (voir Fig 5)<\/p>\n Il faut observer attentivement ce document: le graveur a \u00e9t\u00e9 contraint de pratiquer une saign\u00e9e horizontale pour se tenir au rocher et r\u00e9aliser sa gravure \u00e0 la hauteur d\u00e9sir\u00e9e- c’est l\u00e0 un am\u00e9nagement in\u00e9dit du support, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 sans le d\u00e9figurer-<\/p>\n **SON IMPLANTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n Tout aussi remarquable, ce monument de J.P.ARNAUD qui a utilis\u00e9 ce \u00ab\u00a0dolmen\u00a0\u00bb de fa\u00e7on\u00a0 \u00e9vocatrice, en 1808.Fig 33-34<\/strong> Ou encore:\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 RIGATTI-Fig 35-36<\/strong><\/p>\n Cependant, le sens du monumental, tel que nous l’entendons aujourd’hui, reste une exception, encore que tout r\u00e9cemment Albert.Texier nous laisse ce touchant faire-part de mariage:-Fig 37<\/strong> Qui est sensiblement diff\u00e9rent de la modeste trace d’Emile,son anc\u00eatre –Fig 38<\/strong><\/p>\n ROCKS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Ubaye is a geology Museum with a great variety and most of the time\u00a0 engravers understood pretty well this quality.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n This french flag is present on a pink raw marble rock. An attentive examination shows that it was necessay,first to carve horizontally a ditch to enable\u00a0 carving at the adequate height- this is a very unusual fitting which does not disfigure the rock.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Most of words have been erased, but\u00a0 on both sides are ISLY, SEBASTOPOL,SIDI-BRAHIM (Over ST PETERSBOURG)-SOLFERINO and in the middle: HONNEUR ET PATRIE.<\/em><\/span> ROCK SITUATION<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n is often important as show the choice of JP.ARNAUD\u00a0 who used this \u00ab\u00a0dolmen\u00a0\u00bb with efficience ;or also RIGATTI.<\/em><\/span> DES GRAVURES CACHEES<\/strong><\/p>\n Des gravures dans des endroits \u00ab\u00a0impossibles\u00a0\u00bb, il y en a, il y en a m\u00eame beaucoup, il y a m\u00eame des gravures volontairement enterr\u00e9es, cach\u00e9es. Tout ceci montre que le patrimoine grav\u00e9 de l’Ubaye ne se limite pas au \u00ab\u00a0dit des bergers\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e0 des traces st\u00e9r\u00e9otyp\u00e9es, \u00e0 un concert de lamentations, \u00e0 des commentaires de toute esp\u00e8ce, \u00e0 des bornages \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8res.<\/p>\n HIDDEN TRACES<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n There are carvings in very unusual places, this is not an exception, there are some ones also buried by the carver himself.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n This may raise inadequate questions about magic practices, religion and poor pseudo-anthropological theories.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n I have no explantion nor theory for a practice which is not unusual here.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n In the same mood the \u00ab\u00a0alarm-clock\u00a0\u00bb, which is in fact a watch which was also buried, shows for eternity 10H22, this is for sure not an accident.Anyway it is a strong simulation<\/em> for dreaming.<\/span><\/p>\n For anthropologists delight, we can go-ahead: at that time\u00a0 a watch was some technology acme; but to-day I doubt that a shepherd would carve the figure of his GSM!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n It seems evident that there is a strong feeling of time importance\u00a0 for the shepherd: the stay in the mountain will be for him a constant challenge against time: all along the day, all along the pasture season. The marks, iron-casted ,mention in\u00a0 typical\u00a0 type \u00ab\u00a0NIVELLEMENT GENERAL\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Here, the author used this mention for a very poor anagram which highlights exasperation of people after the \u00ab\u00a0Chemin des Dames\u00a0\u00bb battle in 1917= 500 000 dead.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Most of Ubaye’s engravings talk to us and even more they ..CRY.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n They won’t stop, as this graffito laid with fury: \u00ab\u00a0ADIEU VIRAYSSE…\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n (a fortress at 2700m height)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Also, this trace, coming from Tournoux military jail-now destroyed-\u00a0\u00bb <\/em>war is a<\/strong><\/em> \u00ab\u00a0disaster\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/span> (gentle translation); \u00ab\u00a0Revenge is a clash with God<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb \u00ab\u00a0.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n In fact a mirror effect between the famous \u00ab\u00a0Gott Mitt uns\u00a0\u00bb of German troops and \u00ab\u00a0Gott<\/em> allein\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n The few words highlight the power of evocation,invocation of all these guys.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Now you too: \u00a0 \u00a0 hear them !<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0ET LA POLITIQUE ?<\/strong><\/p>\n Elle n’a gu\u00e8re de succ\u00e8s aupr\u00e8s des bergers!<\/p>\n Mais voici un petit exercice d’observation:<\/p>\n VIVA IL DUCE<\/strong><\/p>\n Un groupe de furieux partisans du \u00ab\u00a0Duce\u00a0\u00bb a constell\u00e9 les murs d’une bergerie avec cette inscription: c’est presque banal.-Fig 45-46-<\/strong><\/p>\n Un autre groupe a fid\u00e8lement continu\u00e9, mais AU SOL, sur le seuil, sur le pavement et l\u00e0, le message est diff\u00e9rent, puisque l\u00e0, une gravure peut \u00eatre:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PIETINEE !….<\/p>\n ABOUT POLITICS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n The interest of shepherds about this topic appear quite poor…,they are realistic people.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Here an observation exercise: \u00ab\u00a0VIVA IL DUCE\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n A party of fanatics laid everywhere\u00a0 in the ruins of this house this sentence; a common practice.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Another group laid the same sentence: on the floor and especially on the doorway, there the message is quite different as the engraving can be …TRAMPLED!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n DE FURIEUX ORIGINAUX !<\/strong><\/p>\n Trop souvent l’emploi de superlatifs et de qualificatifs d\u00e9valuent le propos, quand ils ne trompent pas le lecteur: que dire des \u00ab\u00a0myst\u00e9rieuses gravures\u00a0\u00bb, des \u00ab\u00a0troublantes \u00e9nigmes\u00a0\u00bb dont la proche Vall\u00e9e des Merveilles a fait les frais.<\/p>\n Voici une s\u00e9lection de documents inexpliqu\u00e9s et pas n\u00e9cessairement inexplicables:<\/p>\n CUPULES:<\/strong><\/p>\n Toute cupule observ\u00e9e sur un rocher attire l’attention du chercheur; il est toujours possible qu’elle appartienne \u00e0 une gravure tr\u00e8s ancienne. c’est aussi le signe le plus primitif et le plus ais\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser.<\/p>\n Voici une s\u00e9rie de cupules tr\u00e8s r\u00e9guli\u00e8res et soigneusement espac\u00e9es, je les calque, car la photo est peu lisible et finalement j’obtiens une silhouette inattendue:..celle d’un<\/p>\n ELEPHANT !-Fig 47-<\/strong><\/p>\n On sait que les arch\u00e9ologues s’affrontent depuis longtemps a propos des intineraires du passage d’Hannibal (et ses \u00e9l\u00e9phants) \u00e0 travers les Alpes.
